How to interpret the parameters in the prescription form?
- by LiuSamuel
A prescription, also known as an eyeglass prescription, is a written document provided by an optometrist or ophthalmologist that specifies the corrective lenses needed for a patient's vision. The prescription includes several parameters indicating the type and degree of vision correction required. The following is a detailed explanation of the key parameters in eyeglass prescription:
- Patient information:
patient name
prescription date
- Prescription force (sphere):
OD (Oculus Dexter): represents the prescription power of the right eye. You can use a plus sign (+) to indicate farsightedness and a minus sign (-) to indicate nearsightedness.
OS (Oculus Sinister): represents the prescription power of the left eye.
- Cylinder (Cyl):
This indicates the amount of astigmatism that needs to be corrected. It can be positive or negative. If there is no astigmatism, the value may be listed as "SPH" or "DS" (for no cylinder).
- Axis:
The axis is a number between 1 and 180 degrees that represents the direction of the cylinder. It indicates the direction in which astigmatism correction is applied.
- Add:
This is an additional ability for reading or close work in multifocal prescriptions. It's usually in the "NV" (near vision) or "ADD" section.
- Prism:
Prismatic correction is specified in prism diopter (Δ or p.d.). It is used to correct eye alignment problems such as double vision. Prisms can be specified for one or both eyes.
- Base:
This indicates the direction of the prism correction, which can be upward (U), downward (D), inward (I), or outward (O).
- Interpupillary distance (PD):
PD is the distance between pupil centers in millimeters. It ensures that the optical center of the lens is aligned with the center of the pupil for correct vision correction.
- Near vision (NV) or intermediate vision:
This part of the prescription applies to bifocal or progressive lenses and indicates the additional power needed for reading or intermediate vision.
- Prism base:
If prism correction is specified, specify the cardinal direction, such as upward (U), downward (D), inward (I), or outward (O).
- Brand and material recommendations:
Sometimes, prescriptions may include recommendations for specific lens brands, materials, or coatings based on the patient's needs and preferences.
IFV usually requires these lens parameters when customizing glasses:
- SPH(S)--Spherical lens (myopia or hyperopia degree)
- CYL(C)--Cylinder (astigmatism degree)
- AXIS(A)--Axis position (direction of astigmatism degree)
- Correct Vision(V)--(for example: L 1.0/R 1.0)
- PD - Pupillary distance (pupil distance mm)
